CREDO is graduating to the big leagues! It is now an official member of ASSA (American Social Sciences Association). This allows us to have official sessions at the annual meetings, and we will be organizing our inaugural session at the January 2022 ASSA meetings. Please join us if you can.
This session will be a panel on “Finance and the Social Good”, organized by Valerie Ramey (University of California at San Diego) and Galina Hale (U of California at Santa Cruz), and moderated by Martijn Cremers (University of Notre Dame).
Borja Larrain (Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile), Maureen O’Hara (Cornell University), Ulrike Malmendier (University of California at Berkeley), and Stijn Van Nieuwerburgh (Columbia) will discuss how financial systems can be harnessed to serve broader goals of the social good, combining the ideas of Adam Smith’s The Wealth of Nations and The Theory of Moral Sentiments.
We are very lucky to have as discussants Sr. Alessandra Smerilli, Ph.D, acting Secretary of the Vatican Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development, and Dominic H. Chai, S.J., Ph.D., coordinator of the Vatican Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development COVID-19 Economic Task Force.
The panel will discuss a variety of specific topics, such as how to make housing more affordable, how to promote upward mobility, whether ethical behavior can survive in a network model, and how finance and economic research can incorporate ethical issues, such as principles from Catholic Social Thought.
